If you find yourself anywhere near Kennington, South London, in the near (or distant) future you MUST take a serious detour to 353 Kennington Road, SE11 4QE The Food Lover extraordinaire Sally White and her husband Mark have opened a new neighbourhood cafe/deli/shop where you will be greeted warmly and treated to an array of wonderful homemade delights. Both of these fine people have worked in this business for a long time and indeed they met at the famed Konditor and Cook some years back. Sally also ran the cafe at the Design Museum for many years. Between them they have probably served most of London a coffee or piece of cake at one time or another. However, this is different; their own take on what a neighbourhood food emporium should be. Somewhere where you can sit and read the Sunday papers with a great coffee at your elbow; a place you can stop by on your way home from work to pick up something delightfully home cooked for dinner (for a reasonable price). Fresh homemade pastries, breads and savouries, soups and salads, good hot food, excellent jams and preserves…the list goes on!
A sort of retro-centric / cosy-industrial chic fills the very high ceiling space on a neat corner of Kennington Road. Slightly oriental red plumed metal shades hang from blood-red flex from high across the curved shop front. Reclaimed wooden floorboards meet the shiny copper work top framed by a Black Board painted wall. The masterpiece of this space is the green painted wood detailing… and what a shade of green. Something Mark was completely sure about. No test paint pots used here, just a strong committment to a colour. This is the kind of glossy warm green that manages to be vintage and modern at the same time. In fact the combination of Easter time opening, spectacular green carpentry and the brightest pea salad imaginable make this a joyous cacophony of Spring Greens at Sally White’s. When, later on, we eat the delectable fish cakes at home for dinner we are transported back to this bright airy space full of green. Moist firm cakes of leek, potatoes and fish cooked to perfection…a crescent of unwaxed lemon squeezed on top.
